ABG Cosmology: Anything But God

Cosmologists can admit total ignorance about origins and
publish “science” articles, as long as they remain ABG.

Paul Sutter is a popular astronomer who writes for various science websites. He’s a convivial writer in general, and unafraid to tackle big questions. When asked on this month, “How was the universe created?” he had various suggestions and things to say, but one possible answer—it had a Creator—was completely ignored:

Short answer: We don’t really know how the universe was created, though most astrophysicists believe it started with the Big Bang.

The big bang itself, though, does not answer the question. What happened before the big bang? Sutter professes complete ignorance on that point:

When we try to make sense of the universe when it was less than a second old, we have no theory of physics that can cope with the insanely high temperatures and pressures the universe experienced. All of our theories of physics break down, and we have no understanding of how particles, forces and fields operate in those conditions.

Sutter’s ignorance continues as he explores various speculative ideas from cosmologists:

  • A singularity from which the “big bang” emerged makes no physical sense.
  • We can’t figure out anything without “new physics.”
  • The idea of a multiverse is “murky” as a “possible” idea.

Scientists cannot answer the question now, he says, and may never answer “How was the universe created?”

But there’s another problem: We may never know what caused the Big Bang. In its earliest moments, even our very conceptions of time and space break down. At such extreme scales, normal, everyday concepts like “beginning” and “before” may not even make sense.

Inductive logic, however, leads to an obvious answer. Whenever we see a system of interacting parts that is finely tuned for function, we know without hesitation that it was designed. Why does Sutter ignore the obvious possibility that the universe was intelligently designed? One can imagine him shouting, ‘Hey, we’re talking about science here!’

But wait: science means knowledge. Sutter just admitted that he has no knowledge of anything that he is talking about. Apparently he would rather remain ignorant for the rest of his life than consider that fine tuning required a Fine Tuner, sense required a Logos, and creation required a Creator. He would apparently prefer to remain ignorant with a steadfast commitment to ABG: anything but God!

I dare Sutter to read this new book and argue that his own body is a result of the Stuff Happens Law. Someone want to send him a copy as a Christmas present?

Some Scriptures seem appropriate after watching this leading cosmologist reveal his ignorance to the world:

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools. (Romans 1:18-22)

9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known. (John 1:9-18)

Dr Richter’s book examines many amazing examples of design in our bodies, our planet, and the universe.
