Is the Universe Expanding Too Fast?

Scientists suggest the universe appears to be expand-
ing much faster than conventional models predict.
We discuss implications from a young age perspective.

When we look up at the night sky, we see the vastness of the stars which often makes us typically realize how small we really are compared to the massive vacuum beyond earth. Cosmologists who study the universe in greater depth (who strive to discern the structure and origins of the universe) have also recently been in awe at a new observation: that the universe appears to be expanding at a faster rate than any previous cosmological model can sufficiently account. This finding was published in article earlier this year titled:

The Local Distance Network: A community consensus report on the measurement of the Hubble constant at ∼1% precision (Stefano Casertano et al, Astronomy and Physics, 10 April 2026).

The paper describes a novel method for estimating the expansion rate of the universe called the Local Distance Network (LDN). This method uses a distance network, linking many overlapping methods together making it more robust and precise than previous traditional methods of estimation such as the distance ladder.

The findings of the LDN team significantly defied the predictions of traditional cosmological models. In recalibrating the universe expansion rate (called the Hubble constant (H0), which estimates how fast galaxies are moving away from each other), their measurement shows the universe is expanding faster than the standard Big Bang model predicts (ΛCDM: “Lambda Cold Dark Matter”).

This finding has stirred significant surprise in the cosmological community. In the words of Casterano et al:

“Over the past decade, increasingly precise measurements of H0 have revealed a striking and persistent discrepancy… This disagreement… exceeds the threshold for a statistical fluctuation and has withstood extensive scrutiny.

In this article, we reflect briefly on potential challenges of this discovery on the foundations of cosmology, implications of a more rapid expansion on the age of the universe, and trace some historical paradigm shifts that had brought cosmology closer to the Biblical descriptions of the universe.

The Potential Biblical Witness to Expansion

Long before telescopes, the Bible described the heavens as being “stretched out.” While there are variations within the Creationist community on what exactly this means, many Scriptures use this precise language of an outward expansion, with analogous examples such as tents. For example, in Isaiah 40:22 says God “stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” Job 9:8 also describes that God “alone stretches out the heavens.”

The scientific and theological implications of this stretching would likely imply that the universe had a beginning. Without endorsing the interpretations of Big Bang cosmology, the consensus of expansion implies that the universe is not eternal, i.e., there was a point in history where the universe began to exist.

Despite Casterano’s article describing the expansion of the universe as a “…cornerstone of modern cosmology,” interestingly, the Bible’s description of a “stretched out” universe conflicted conventional cosmology for several millennia. Before we examine the present findings and tensions further, it is relevant to reflect on previous paradigm shifts in secular cosmology that brought the field closer to admitting parts of the Biblical narrative about the universe’s history.

Robert Jastrow, the Steady-State Theory and Historical Paradigm Shifts in Cosmology

For centuries, many scientists assumed the universe was eternal and unchanging. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle taught a “steady-state” view of the cosmos, and even in the early 20th century, many physicists resisted the idea of a beginning because it seemed too close to religious teaching. Robert Jastrow, the astrophysicist who founded NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, was one of these skeptical scientists.

Jastrow was a respected voice in planetary science and cosmology, known for his ability to communicate complex ideas to the public. At first, he leaned toward the prevailing scientific reluctance to accept a cosmic beginning. But his turning point came with mounting evidence of cosmic expansion. In the 1920s, Edwin Hubble’s observations showed that galaxies are moving away from us, proving the universe is not static but expanding. Later discoveries, such as the cosmic microwave background radiation (thought by conventional cosmologists to be the faint afterglow of the Big Bang), reinforced the idea that the universe had a definite origin.

Faced with this evidence, Jastrow admitted the profound implications. He wrote in God and the Astronomers (1978): “Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner… they are left with a story that has the universe coming into being out of nothing.” For Jastrow, the realization that the universe had a beginning was not just a scientific conclusion but a philosophical shock, as he recognized that science had arrived at the same truth theology had proclaimed for centuries: the cosmos is not eternal, but created, just as described in Genesis 1:1. In response to this realization, Jastrow wrote:

For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream… he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.

What Jastrow meant is that modern science, despite its reliance on reason and mathematics, eventually arrived at the same conclusion Scripture proclaimed long ago: the universe had a beginning.

With the new findings of an even greater-than-anticipated expansion of the universe confirmed by the LDN, cosmology may yet be facing another similar turning point. In the words of the authors of this most recent finding, Casterano et al explain the magnitude of the discrepancies between the observed and predicted data as follows:

“This disagreement… exceeds the threshold for a statistical fluctuation and has withstood extensive scrutiny.”

This admission shows that conventional cosmological models have failed in their predictions of what would be expected based on their assumptions of the evolution of the universe.

Implications of the Continued Failures of Evolutionary Cosmology

As the Big Bang theory claims that the rate of the universe’s expansion has been predictable ever since its supposed beginning 13.8 billion years ago, the core implications of unexpected rapid expansion would likely have the following among its potential implications:

  • The accelerated expansion may be evidence that the evolutionary timeline is inflated, i.e., that the universe is younger than Big Bang cosmology claims, or
  • New physics beyond ΛCDM must be invented.

(Unsurprisingly), Casterano and colleagues appear to favour the second potential implication: to invoke new physics. As they concede:

“It poses a major challenge to the standard Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model and may point to new physics.”

While further studies will be important to make sweeping conclusions, Casterano et al’s study shows that the difference between model prediction and reality is statistically significant: a difference far too large to be a coincidence. In view of this, Casterano and colleagues make an attempt to reconcile observations by using several methods, as they describe:

“In recognition that the tension may be indicating something profound, greater reliability has been sought through an increasing number of different methods.”

While from an evolutionary standpoint these findings may be surprising, from a Biblical perspective, this is unsurprising. Scripture not only affirms a beginning, but that this beginning would have been far shorter than the evolutionary timescale assumes.

Cosmology Catches Up Again to the Bible?

Casterano et al’s work provides food for thought for new evidence that places conventional evolutionary cosmological assumptions into question. As with the old steady-state theory of the universe, Big Bang assumptions of the universe’s timeline of existence may also have to be revised for the theory to remain relevant. While continued research is important, this study opens new challenges assumptions about the age of the universe that should not be ignored.

As Jastrow foresaw, scientists climbing the mountain of cosmology continue to find theologians waiting at the summit. The accelerated expansion may well be part of a suite of affirmations of the truths creationists have long proclaimed: the heavens are stretched out, the universe had a beginning, and its expansion declares the glory of its Creator and the reliability of the Biblical timeline.
