What can you say but Wow? Illustra Media used a high-speed camera to capture a little-known fact about hummingbirds: they generate rainbows! This phenomenon has been photographed in still photos once before, but never like this: in slow-motion video.

Illustra says,

Our goal was to film the remarkable iridescent light show that’s produced when a hummingbird’s wings (flapping at 60-beats per second) are perfectly aligned with the sun. To do this, Jerry Harned designed and constructed an ingenious platform that enabled us to attract hummers to very specific areas in his backyard where our camera was focused and ready to record whenever the small bird entered the frame.

Over an 8-day span, Jerry’s invention worked wonderfully, and we captured more than three hours of often spectacular slow-motion footage. We’ve edited these stunning scenes into a six-minute video that documents beautifully unique evidence of God’s artistry and creative power.

“The ultra-slow motion footage in this short video may be unique in the history of wildlife photography,” the caption adds.
